Killarney hotel wins Evening Herald Travel Award

Mark Evans, the travel editor of the Evening Herald, recently published a list of places he felt were worthy of receiving a travel award for the services they have provided to Irish tourists over the last year. Among the many categories he listed, one was the “Hotel With The Best View” and the accolade went to the Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Spa in Killarney. Mark said he had difficulty choosing between the Aghadoe Heights Hotel and the Sheen Falls Lodge in Kenmare. However, in the end he decided in favour of the Killarney hotel because of its “jaw-dropping” views over the Killarney lakes and makes the reflection that, given its intrinsic beauty, it is no wonder he is drawn to visit Killarney year after year.

The Aghadoe Heights was opened in Killarney in 1969 and has undergone continuous improvements over the years currently enjoying five star status. The hotel has 74 bedrooms and suites including a 3,000 sq ft Penthouse. Each of the suites offers fantastic views over either the lake, the gardens or the Kerry countryside and mountains. The Penthouse is located on top of the recently-built Aveda Concept Destination Spa and boasts 360 degree views of the Lakes of Killarney, the Kerry mountains, Killarney town and Ross Castle.  The hotel also has a fine restaurant called the Lake Room with offerings from Executive Chef Robin Suter. In the centre of the restaurant is a glass-walled wine cellar where guests can physically view the wines before deciding on that special vintage to accompany their meal.

Apart from relaxing and getting pampered in the Aveda Concept Destination Spa guests can also take advantage of many other facilities including an indoor, heated swimming pool, a gym and a tennis court. Fishing trips on the Killarney lakes and rivers can also be organised at the concierge desk and there is a selection of trails that run through the National park where guests can either run or walk to relax, exercise or just work up an appetite for the Lake Room restaurant.
